The reading and lecture are about 4-day work week policy. The author of the reading feels that a 4 day work week will be beneficial for employee as well as the company. he lecturer challenges the claims made by the author. He is of the opinion that these explanations are faulty. To begin with, the author argues that 4 day work week with less pay will lead to benefit economy, employee and the company,. The article mentions the employee will feel rested and alert, so he/she will make less costly errors and hiring more staff to accomplish the work would not result in additional payroll. This specific claim is challenged by the lecturer. He claims that hiring is expensive, hiring more staff means spending more money in training and medical benefits, it doesn't matter whether you work 4 day or 5 day per week, healthcare cost will remain the same. Additionally, he says that company expectations will increase as they would expect a 5 days work to be completed in 4 days and that would result in overtime by the employees. Secondly, the writer suggests that it would reduce unemployment rate. In the article is said that for every 4 employee, the company can hire a new employee without any additional cost and employees will have more free time. The lecturer however rebuts that by mentioning that 4 day work week will reduce the quality of life. He states that job stability will be reduced for them during economic downturn, because they will be the first to get fired over 5 day work week employees. Also for managerial positions, a 5 day work week employee will be given preference over 4 day work week to supervise.
