Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Young people today have no influence on the important decisions that determine the future of society as a whole. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
It is often said that the youth are the foundation of the nation's future. It is undeniable that they have an influence on decisions that determine the ways of the society. In the subsequent essay, I will outline how social policies such has marriage laws and environmental policies by the government are influenced by the young generation. First, let us take a look at social policies, more specifically, LGBTQAI+ rights. Recently, more people who indentify as different genders and sexual orientations have confidently come out of the closet, to proudly live and function as equals in the society. Previously, identifying as anything other than male or female and having any other kinds of sexual relationships apart with the opposite sex, was considered taboo, or worse, criminal. However, with a rise in pride marches and mass movements, this taboo is slowly being erased with changing marriage laws. For example, I live in India were same sex marriage was criminalised under section 377. Many youth, including me, took to the streets to protest against this law which was finally abolished. This goes to show the power of the young generation to question social stigma and laws around such taboo topics. Secondly, even environmental policies are being put in place thanks to the young generation. The damage from the current rate of globalisation is evident from the impacts of climate change with raising sea-levels and global warming. Although the UN has set standards for sustainable development, the society has not yet realised the seriousness of the situation. It is upto the young people to persuade the older, more powerful adults in authority to take effective steps to make a better future for them. Greta Thunberg is a great example in this case. She directly questioned authorities and protested outside government institutions to raise awarness to incorporate envrionmentally concious laws. She made headlines all over the world and inspired other young people to do the same in their countries. In this manner, she could influence different people from various societies, and make an impact on the decisions made my the government and other people in power. To conclude, the young generation has taken many steps to influence authorities to change the world for better, from social policies to environmental policies. Futhermore, their collective voices have the power to change laws that can eventually change the behaviour of society in regard to such aspects.
