Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? In the past, young people depended too much on their parents to make decisions for them; today young people are better able to make decisions about their own lives. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
Many people think parents’ decisions are always superior and follow them religiously. Some people think otherwise and form their own decisions. Controversy exists on whether young people depended too much on their parents in the past as compared to now. From my vantage point of view, I believe that today young people are somewhat better in terms of decision-making about their own lives. I feel this way for mainly two reasons which I will further elaborate in the essay. To begin with, nowadays youth are more aware than the past generations. They have more access to the internet where they learn from a vast multitude of people who act as mentors. By having an access to a wide array of knowledge from different people, they are able to think about themselves in a more profound way. Hence, they are getting better at decision-making about their lives. Drawing from my own experience, my father mostly depended on his parents’ decisions. In those olden days, young people mostly listened to their parents for advice. My father’s parents advised him to become a doctor which he followed without fail. For instance, he had interests in other fields like literature. Since his parents told him to become a doctor, he listened to them disregarding his own interests. For this reason, I think that people in the past were not independent decision-makers and inclined more toward their parents’ advice. Second, society has changed a lot. Today parents are expecting and encouraging their children to make decisions for themselves. Since parents are motivating them to think about their own lives, pupils have started to introspect, retrospect, and self-analyze themselves. This has led to better understanding and increased the level of decision-making. Furthermore, today youth are anchors of their own lives. It is certainly clear why nowadays young people are better at decision-making than their past generation. In a nutshell, I agree that yesterday’s people mostly depended on their parents to make a decision, and today’s youth have become more independent and better. Most of the older generation people were unaware and in most cases, parents were their only source of mentors. They were the guiding path to their lives. Moreover, the parents were more readily involved in their pupils’ decision-making. Unlike nowadays, where parents are expecting them to make their own decisions.
