Important lessons learned at university stay with students for the rest of life. Personally, I believe it is important to take history courses for all university students. I feel this way for two reasons, which I will explore in the following essay. First of all, history classes take students down memory lane and help them understand the struggles and plights of people of that time. They help in challenging the critical thinking of the students. Because oftentimes, most students would not be able to assimilate the fact that whatever took place in the past was for good or bad which opens doors to probing the past more. My personal experience is a compelling example to illustrate this. When I was a student at a University, I decided to learn Indian History. I remember, distinctively, my Professor was talking about the heritage of India and how it fell into shambles in no time. Most people back then lost something that was way too dear to them and lived a miserable life. The lecture was mind-boggling and made me question everything about the governance that existed. Secondly, lessons on history can be used to inculcate empathy and compassion of some sense among students. Mostly all nations' history is filled with anecdotes about war and any sort of destructive activity toward humans. These incidents at times ooze strong emotions in the readers or disciples. For instance, the literature on Indian History has multiple mentions of its Partition. The era around that time was quite different, people were brutally beaten, and were made to move to different places leaving their homes behind. When I learned about that episode, it actually shook me to the core and made me ponder how difficult it was for the people back then. In conclusion, I believe everyone should sign-up for a history class during their time at the university. This is because it deepens critical thinking, and invokes abstract emotions.
