Is 4-day workweek better than 5-day workweek. Summarize your opinion based on reading and listening passage.
The article states that the conversion from 5-days workweek to 4-days workweek by the companies and government agencies offers numerous benefits to both business and employees. However, the professor explains that reducing workweek by 1-day will not be beneficial and opposes most of the claims made by the author.
First, the reading claims that reducing the workweek by 1 day will lower expenses dealt by employees in terms of gas usage for commute. The professor refutes this claim by saying that an employee on an average would be travelling 30 miles less if 1 day were to be reduced from the workweek. He continues to explain that this employee would only save $15 to $20 for a single day and around $850 per year if they were to work 1 day less in a week. He believes it's not feasible to hamper business operations for such small amount of savings.
Second, the article posits that operating costs faced by the companies will reduce and will improve business profitability. However, the professor says that reducing 1 working day will result in loss of 20% of the overall business. He adds on that employees will be working 2 hours extra and that clients will not be available during those extra 2 hours of the day resulting in less efficient utilization of company's human resources.
Third, the reading claims that reduction in 1 working day will help an employee spending more time with their family and children. The professor opposes this claim by saying that the parents who are working 10 hours will not be able to spend more time with their children because most of their children will be in school when they are working. He also explained that parents might have to look for day-care facilities which is a stressful task.
