Some people like to do only what they already do well. Other people prefer to try new things and take risks. Which do you prefer? Use specific reasons and examples to support your choice.

Choosing whether to do the thing they are already familiar with, or to try out something they’ve never done before is a rather difficult decision to make for many people. What one winds up choosing reflects a lot about their personality, and their values. I, personally, prefer to try new things and take risks. I will explain a few reasons why in the following essay. Firstly, choosing the unfamiliar and seeking out new experiences helps in making me a more well-rounded person, the reason being that new experiences translate to new skills. For example, I always try to broaden my reading genres. Though fantasy novels are my go-to in most cases, reading various types of nonfiction books about history and science, or other classic fiction helped me to become a better conversationalist. If I had stick to the familiar and only read fantasy books, the range of topics I can hold a conversation in would have subsided considerably. Moreover, unfamiliar and new experiences opens up many different perspectives. For instance, I worked as a subtitler for a movie production company last year. It was nothing like I expected, translating and subtitling a film dialogue was a very demanding and tedious task. And even if you manage to translate it somehow, it still doesn’t mean it’s a good translation. So consequently, I now see movie subtitles in a completely new light now. I learned to analyze and appreciate a good translation. Lastly, most risky things tend to be the most fruitful ones. The most risky decision I ever made was to cut my hair short. I’ve always had a long hair, so the thought of sporting a short hair was am attractive yet intimidating one. But I decided to just go for it, and I couldn’t have been happier with my decision. It has made things much easier in regards of styling, and overall maintenance of my hair. In conclusion, I always try to seek out new experiences and take risks because it makes me a very well-rounded person, helps to see things in a new perspective, and more than often brings in fruitful results.
