Your city has decided to build a statue or monument to honor a famous person in your country. Whom would you choose? Use reasons and specific examples to support your choice.

If my city’s authorities wanted to build a statue of a famous Russian person, I would presonally prefer it to be the statue of Peter the Great, I have several reasons to feel this way that I will explore in the following essay. To begin with, Peter modernized the country. Russia in the beginning of 18th century was significantly falling behind modern technological progress. For example, before Peter Russia had no ships. He went to Europe stayed there several years to learn ship building techniques, then he came back to Russia and built the first Russian fleet. This allowed the country to become an international trader and mighty naval power. Secondly, Peter won several important wars that led to enlargment of the country. Russia had no access to sea back then, but after those successful wars Russia gained access to the Baltic and the Black seas. This played a big role in construction of the Russian empire, as it gained us military dominance and opened up commercial trading routes. Finally, Peter built a beatiful city on the coast of the Baltic sea from strathc and made it the capital of the country. This was the first city in Russia which architecture copied Europian styles and in places even surpassed Europian masterpieces. Until now St. Petersburg is considered to be one of the most beautiful cities at least in the whole Eastern Europe. In conclusion, I believe that modernization and enlargement of Russia, as well as construction of the country’s capital make Peter the Great the first candidate to deserve to have a new statue built in Russia.
