Gender equality means providing equal oppotunities to both men and women in political, economic, education, and health aspects. How can schools support gender equality goals?
In a world where powerful women like Rosa Parks, Winnie Mandela, and Kartini sacrificed their freedom and lives to provide womankind the equality that they deserve, it is only right for our generation to keep on fighting especially as women face more personal and institutional threats. Despite women and men being put on the same pedestal in some aspects, the world we live in is not a a Utopia. As more and more youth advocate for the gender equality movement, schools (as the center of the youth’s community), should support and help solve this issue.
When tackling the gender equality issue, schools are one of the first places where perspectives are developed. With that in mind, school adapt more syllabus and diversity subject topics to include more information about women. For example, women suffrage, healthcare, and feminism. Adapting gender equality should not just be done in classrooms but also in the schools’ library. Providing a wider range of books, articles, and resources for students to read upon that might ignite a spark for them to act on the gender equality issue.
One out of three women have been sexually harrassed in their life time. Schools should provide support groups or anonymous forums for these female victims to not ostracize them. In sports events conducted by the school, an even playing field for female and male players is a small step towards gender equality. Including female staff and students in to the school community where they can feel safe is a move that truly adapts the targets of the sustainable Development Goals.
A mixture of education and inclusion in a school environment will not only promote gender equality in the school itself but might just inspire a student or staff to advocate for gender equality in other communities.
