People should not be forced to study courses that they do not find useful. If I were forced to give my opinion, I would disagree with the idea that history courses should be compulsory for students. I feel this way mainly for two reasons that I will explain in the following paragraphs. To begin with, engineering students do not need to learn anything about history. This course is not useful for them because they are focused on studying other subjects that will help them to get a good job in the future. Engineering students are usually busy. They have complicated exams, so they cannot waste their time on history courses. My personal experience is a compelling illustration of this. When I was in my sophomore year, I was forced to take a course about Peruvian history. I spent several hours reading books about that topic because my university required me to get an excellent score on it to preserve my scholarship. I could pass the course but it caused my grades in other courses to decrease. If I had not taken that course, I would have had more time to study other courses that were more important. Furthermore, students who are forced to take history courses are not excellent. People usually do not like to be forced to do anything. Students that have been forced to sign onto history courses that they do not enjoy, often get terrible scores. For instance, when I was in freshman year, I knew a senior student that was forced to sign on a course about universal history. He did not like that topic, so he missed a lot of classes. He was trying for many years to approve the final exam of it. In the end, he was not able to pass it, as a result, he could not obtain his degree. If the university had not forced him to take that course, he would have obtained his diploma. In conclusion, I strongly believe that history courses must not be required for students that are not interested in that topic. This is because history courses are not as useful as others. Moreover, forcing students to take history courses only causes them to get low scores.
