Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? “Overall, the widespread use of the internet has a mostly positive effect on life in today’s world.” Use reasons and details to support your opinion.
The invention of the internet has impacted the history of humankind in several aspects of its development. I agree that this technology has brought different benefits worldwide. I feel this way for two reasons which I will examine in this essay.
First of all, communication is an easier and faster task compared to the ones with wire telephones or radio signals for everyone and wherever they are. Evidently, there are still challenges for online calls such as the audio and image quality but those issues will be improved with time. Consequently, it is possible for two people to keep in touch even when they live in two different cities or continents. For example, many members of my father’s family are based in Canada, and members of my mother’s family, are in Spain. Both groups have lived in their respective countries for more than fifteen years in order to find a better future. I always remember how I managed to communicate with them when they got there for the first time. I would go to telephone cabins and rent one for one hour and talk to them. Besides it was really expensive, the process took so long because of the large number of digits. Nevertheless, it is totally distinct now. Taking my cell phone, looking for the contact, and tapping on my screen last less than one minute. I have video calls with my grandmother, my aunts, and cousins every day almost for free, and with no technical delays. In short, If it was not for the internet, I would be unable to spend time with my loved ones and continue building a relationship despite the distance and technological difficulties.
Second, opportunities for overseas students are each day more accessible because of the interconnection between institutions in the world. Hence, scholarships and university applications are at everyone’s hand with fully informed websites, communication channels, and contacts of people who have been awarded that grant or applied to the same college. It is better exemplified by my experience. I came to Canada to do research at the University of Alberta for four months. I applied for the internship last year in February and got the results in June. I arrived in Edmonton in January and during this year online information and appointments were crucial for me to follow each step of the process. Many other international students that I have met here tell me the same. In other words, if I had not had an online connection, I would not have applied to this awesome opportunity for young students and finally succeeded in arriving here.
In conclusion, I am of the opinion that the internet has improved everyday life. This is because it allows people to communicate with each other in spite of distances and economic situations, and because it lets students apply for enriching opportunities worldwide without difficulties.
