Question Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Having children is less important than it was in the past. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer. Be sure to use your own words. Do not use memorized examples.

Many people think that having children has become less important than it was in the past. I agree with that opinion for the two following reasons: The first reason is that infant mortality is much less common than it used to be and, secondly, children are no longer an important part of the workforce in today's society. First, the chance of a child reaching adulthood is much higher than it used to be. In the past, many children died when they were very young from injuries and disease. In order to have at least a few children survive to adulthood, parents would have many children. However, over the last 100 years there have been many advances in medicine that have allowed people to live longer and healthier lives. Such medical advances, like vaccines, antibiotics, and surgeries, allow people to survive health problems that would have been a death sentence a century ago. So, parents can have fewer children and still reasonably expect to have children that successfully reach adulthood. Second, children are not an important part of the workforce anymore. In the past, society was more agrarian and, thus, most people were farmers. Farmers needed as many people as possible to work the land. Children would help with whatever tasks they could on the farm, from milking cows to picking fruits or vegetables. Later, after more of the population moved into cities, children worked in factories to provide enough money for the family. Today, we know that educating children is better than having them work, and there are laws that prevent them from working when they are young. So, they are not an important part of the workforce anymore and there is less need for them to contribute to the family economy. In conclusion, I believe that having children is less important than it was in the past. I think this because modern medicine allows more children to reach adulthood, and because children are not an important part of the workforce anymore.
