The reading and the lecture are both about the collapse of the civilization of Easter Island. The author of the reading eels that there are three possible explanations for the collapse. The lecture challenges the claims made by the author. To begin with, the author argues that the collapse might have been caused by rats that ate the seeds of palm trees. The article mentions that this caused erosion and soil loss, which made it hard to grow foods. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He claims that even if deforestation occurred the people on the island would have enough diet, since the majority of their diets came from sea, and they also grow potatoes o the rock garden in the weak soil. Secondly, the writer suggests that the collapse may have been caused by warfare, since many curve blades like weapons found in the realm. The lecturer, however, cast doubt on this point. He raises the point that they might be used as tools for cutting stone because the tool did not sharp and pointed. Finally, the author posits that the society on the island could have3 been destroyed by exposure to diseases brought by foreign visitors.b In the article, it is said that thousands of people died as a result of this. The lecturer, on the other hand, rebuts this by raising the point that the people on the island already started to decline before American or European visitors arrived. Furthermore, he notes that the population when foreign visitors arrived is only about three thousand but the initial population might have twenty-five thousand. It means the cause of the holocaust of the people on the island is esoteric,
