The reading and the lecture are both about the collapse of the civilization of Ister Island. The author of the reading feels that three are three possible explanations for the collapse but the lecturer is against it. To begin with, the author argues that the collapse might have been caused by rats that ate seeds of palm trees. The article mentions that this caused erosion and soil loss, which made it hard to grow food. This specific argument is challenged challenged by the lecturer. He says that even if deforestation occurred the people on the island would have sufficient food. Additionally, he states that majority of their diet came through sea, and they also used rock gardens to grow potatoes in weak soil. Secondly, the author suggests that the collapse may have been caused by warfare, since there were lots of curved blades that would use in war. The lecturer casts doubt on this point. He points that the shape and size of the blades show that they were not used in warfare. Furthermore, he posits that the blades are neither sharp nor pointy, so they probably used as tools for cutting stones. Finally, the author states that society might be destroyed by disease, which was brought by foreign visitors. In the article, it is said that thousands of inhabitants of island died as a result of this. In contrast, the lecturer denies the statement presented by the author. he elaborates on this by bringing the point that the population of island already started to decline ev3enm before European and American travelers arrived. he notes that there were only about 3000 people on the island when foreign visitors came but the initial population would have about twenty-five thousand, so the reason is inconvenient.
